The Great Lakes region was once home to many indigenous tribes, including the myaamia - the downstream people. HEPL welcomes Logan York, Tribal Historic Preservation Officer for the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma. Logan will teach us about the history of the myaamia people, 1700s to present, with an emphasis on how the Miami Tribe is thriving today. The 45-minute presentation will be followed by Q&A, as well as time to explore physical artifacts.
This program will take place in-person at the Fishers library, along with an option to join virtually via Zoom. Registration is required to receive the Zoom meeting invitation. In-person attendance is strongly encouraged. Registration for in-person attendance encouraged but not required. All ages are welcome.
We thank the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma for their generous use of time and resources to educate our community about its earliest history and peoples. The Miami Tribe of Oklahoma is a federally recognized Sovereign Nation. Their homelands lie within the boundaries of the states of Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, lower Michigan, and lower Wisconsin. Today, The Miami Tribe of Oklahoma works to perpetuate their cultural identity and to re-establish a land base for myaamia citizens.
